Prince William’s Playful Comment About David Beckham Says It All

Prince William isn’t just the future King of England; he’s also a massive football (i.e. soccer, for those in the USA) fan with a great sense of humor. His recent comments about longtime friend David Beckham prove that their bromance is alive and well, and he knows exactly how to keep things light.

William Knows What’s at Stake
At a recent event, Prince William was put on the spot with a tough football question: If he had to pick between Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham for a penalty shootout, who would he choose? The Prince clearly felt the pressure, joking, “This is gonna hurt. Becks, I think—just… I think Becks might kill me if I don’t say him,” per CB News.

Classic William; graceful under pressure but not above poking fun at his friendships. And truthfully? He’s probably right. If he had picked Zidane, Beckham might have had some words for him later.

A Friendship Built on Respect
Prince William and David Beckham go way back, and it’s not just surface-level celebrity friendship. Beckham has always been vocal about his admiration for the royal family, so much so that he once said, “I always get emotional talking about anything that I do with our royal family, because I’ve always been a huge royalist. I was brought up in a household that adored and loved everything that came with the royal family,” according to People.

According to CB News Beckham has also made it clear “[If William messages] ‘I need you to do this’ or ‘be there’, it’s always a ‘yes’.” For these two, it’s not just words. They have worked together on several important causes. Most recently, they teamed up for London’s Air Ambulance charity, raising over $21 million to fund two new helicopters, per People. At the event, they both signed one of the helicopters, with William writing “Back in the middle,” and Beckham adding, “Thank you. Fly Safe. Love, David Beckham.”

It’s clear their friendship isn’t just about football or shared public status. It seems built on genuine respect and a mutual drive to make a difference. And this latest playful moment just cements what we already knew: William and Beckham aren’t just famous figures crossing paths… they’re real friends who know how to have a laugh, even when the stakes are as high as a penalty kick.
