‘I Don’t Look Back At Anything And Regret It Or Cringe’ Victoria Beckham Shares Her Life In Beauty

I’m so excited,’ Victoria Beckham tells me over the phone, the elation in her voice palpable as we dial in to discuss her much-anticipated launch. ‘I’ve been obsessed with make-up brushes for longer than I can remember, and ultimately, my brand has always been about creating what I desire and can’t find anywhere else,’ she says of the soon-to-drop brush collection.

Of course, it would have been easy for the former pop star and one-half of the world’s most recognisable power couple to rest on the laurels of her success and celebrity; but Beckham didn’t take the simple route. Instead, the multi-hyphenate has reinvented the wheel and brought to fruition a brand that fills gaps in the beauty industry, in her own words, creating products that were missing from her own make-up bag – be that the blendable Satin Kajal Liner or next-level concealer pen.

The latest expansion of her beauty line – a make-up brush collection set to launch on April 1 – is no exception. ‘It’s all about the why for me. I look at what’s missing, and then I find a way to create it; it’s all about the product,’ she emphasises. ‘Every single brush deserves a place in this collection, and I’ve really focused on the development side, making sure that everything is so considered and that the execution is perfect.’
These brushes are novel both in their application and their aesthetic. ‘I was inspired by the precision of a calligraphy pen. I like to think of my face as a blank canvas, whether I’m drawing or painting, it’s all about precision. I’m really trying to simplify the application process with these brushes, so that every brush is the perfect shape to help streamline creating a smokey eye or applying foundation,’ she tells me.

It’s no surprise to learn that Beckham’s past beauty evolution has provided plenty in the way of inspiration for her product portfolio today. ‘I look at my make-up looks as a journey,’ she says. ‘I don’t look back at anything and regret it or cringe; I look back and I smile. I think it’s been a real journey and something that I celebrate and I’ve learned so much from. I’ve seen so many pictures of myself in the past, and I’ve been able to learn from seeing those images in my development process.’
‘A prime example is when I created the Lid Lustre Eyeshadow,’ she adds. ‘Being on stage and wearing a sparkly eye taught me so much and it’s why I was so specific about the size of the pigments and the fallout of the products. I’ve seen so many pictures where I look like I’ve been punched in the face on stage because the pigments have been too large. When I’m developing my products, I take into consideration my own experiences.’ As she puts it herself: ‘I am difficult to please and I never put anything out there until I truly believe it is the best in class.
What would she tell her 20-year old self? ‘Don’t overpluck your eyebrows, because I did do that in the nineties,’ she says. ‘It’s why I created Baby Blade, and truthfully, my husband has never seen me without it on.’
When I ask for the best piece of beauty advice she’s been given, the answer is simple: ‘Cleansing your skin; not just to wash off your make-up, but also to remove dirt and toxins and cleansing in the right way without stripping your skin barrier. I always listen to my skin. Sometimes I double cleanse; I love the lactic acid cleanser when I need a really good strong cleanse. But sometimes if my skin is feeling a little dry and puffy, then I like to use the oil cleanser and facial massage.’
